History of Valle dei Laghi

The Valley of the Lakes has a very ancient history, linked to the presence of water and its fertile soils. The earliest traces of settlement date back to prehistoric times, with communities living along the lakeshore. During Roman times, the valley became an important route between Italy and northern Europe. In the Middle Ages, with the construction of Toblino Castle, the area acquired a strategic role under the control of the prince-bishops of Trent. In later centuries, the economy developed around viticulture, with the production of the famous Vino Santo Trentino, a tradition still carried on today in the valley’s wineries.

DivinNosiola is n festival dedicated to Vino Santo and Nosiola, with tastings, winery visits and vineyard walks. Inwinter there is the Grand Carnival Valle dei Laghi, no of the most anticipated events, with masked parades, floats and street performances in the villages of the valley. For distillate lovers there is the Santa Massenza Grappa Festival, a ‘chance to discover the secrets of artisanal distillation and savor the tradition of Trentino grappa.

Lake Toblino

Toblino Castle

How to get to Valle dei Laghi

The Valle dei Laghi is well connected and easily accessible from various locations in Trentino.

By car

From the A22 Brenner freeway, exit at Trento Nord or Trento Sud and continue on the SS45bis in the direction of Riva del Garda. The scenic road crosses the valley and offers spectacular views.

By train

The nearest train station is Trent. From there, local buses connect the main towns in the valley, with frequent trips to Vezzano and Toblino.

By bus

From Trent station, lines B204 and B205 serve the valley, with stops at major population centers.

By airplane

The nearest airports are:

  • Verona Villafranca (VRN) – about 90 km
  • Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) – about 130 km
  • Milan Malpensa (MXP) – approximately 200 km

From the airports, you can continue by car or direct trains to Trent.
