Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda is a picturesque town located at the northern end of Lake Garda, nestled between the crystal clear waters of the lake and the majestic Brenta Dolomites. This fascinating combination of lake and mountain landscapes makes Riva del Garda an ideal destination for lovers of nature, sports and culture. The town boasts a mild climate and a wealth of outdoor activities, attracting visitors from all over the world in search of adventure and relaxation.

History of Riva del Garda

The origins of Riva del Garda date back to prehistoric times, with evidence of human settlement as early as the Middle Paleolithic. During the Bronze Age, the area saw the development of pile-dwelling villages, as evidenced by findings in nearby Lake Ledro. In Roman times, Riva was known as Ripa and became an important trading center due to its strategic location on the routes between northern Italy and central Europe.

In the Middle Ages, the town was contested between several powers, including the Counts of Tyrol and the Republic of Venice. In the 15th century, Riva del Garda came under Venetian control, a period during which important fortifications, such as the Rocca and the Bastion, were built to protect the town from enemy raids. Later, in the 16th century, the town became part of the Habsburg Empire, maintaining a key role in the trade routes of the Alpine area.

During the 19th century, it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and became a popular tourist resort, prized for its mild climate and natural beauty. After World War I, the town was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, beginning a new chapter in its history.

What to see in Riva del Garda

Riva del Garda offers a rich historical, artistic and natural heritage, making it a must-see destination for those visiting Lake Garda.

From imposing medieval fortifications to breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains, here are the main attractions not to be missed.

The Rocca and the Upper Garda Museum (MAG)

The Rocca of Riva del Garda is an impressive medieval fortress, surrounded by a moat and connected to the city center by bridges. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, when Riva del Garda was an important strategic center. Over time, the Rocca underwent various transformations, becoming a noble residence during Venetian rule and later a barracks under Austro-Hungarian rule. Today it houses the Alto Garda Museum (MAG), which chronicles the history and culture of the region through collections of art, archaeology and historical artifacts. From the terraces of the Rocca there is a splendid view of the harbor and Lake Garda.

Apponale Tower

Dominating Piazza III Novembre, the Apponale Tower is one of the symbols of Riva del Garda. Built in the 13th century, the tower had a defensive and watchtower function to protect the town from enemy attacks and control commercial traffic on the lake. At 34 meters high, the tower has been restored several times over the centuries and can now be visited: climb its 165 steps to the top, from which there is a breathtaking view of the town, lake and surrounding mountains. At the entrance to the tower, there is a statue of the “Anzolim de la Tor,” the angel that has become one of the symbols of Riva del Garda.

The Bastion

Perched on the slope of Mount Rocchetta, the Bastion is a Venetian fortification dating back to the early 16th century. Built to defend the city from enemy attacks, the Bastion was partially destroyed by French troops in 1703 during the War of the Spanish Succession. Today it is one of the city’s most fascinating vantage points, reachable on foot with a walk of about 20 minutes or by using the modern panoramic elevator, which allows you to ascend in a few minutes while enjoying spectacular views. Near the Bastion there is also a restaurant with a panoramic terrace, perfect for a relaxing break overlooking Lake Garda.

Church of the Inviolata

Considered one of the masterpieces of Trentino Baroque architecture, the Church of the Inviolata was built in the 17th century and is distinguished by its distinctive octagonal plan. The interior of the church is an authentic artistic jewel: decorated with frescoes, gilded stuccoes and altars made of precious marble, it offers an atmosphere of great charm. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Inviolate, to whom the faithful attribute miraculous powers. Even today it is still an important place of worship and a must-see for those visiting Riva del Garda.

Ponale Trail

The Ponale Trail is one of the most iconic hiking trails on Lake Garda. This scenic trail, which connects Riva del Garda to the Ledro Valley, follows the route of an old road carved into the rock in the 19th century. Today it is an exclusively pedestrian and bicycle route, offering spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Along the way, you will encounter rock-cut tunnels, sheer cliffs, and breathtaking viewpoints. The trail is suitable for both hikers and mountain bikers, and is especially impressive at sunset, when the golden light reflects off the lake waters.

These are just some of the attractions that make Riva del Garda a unique and fascinating destination. The town offers a perfect balance of history, nature, and outdoor activities, satisfying the needs of every type of traveler.
